VENDA INDIGENOUS ART TOUR - May 2008

Photos, paintings and prose by TCE traveler Renee King

South Africa Reflections

Africa. You push me. You pull me. You stretch me. You squeeze me. You make me bend (or I would break).
I love your pulse and your throbbing. I love your solid red earth. I love your wild sensuous atmosphere.
Africa. You are joy and sorrow. You are hard and soft. You are heavy and light. You are edgy and bold.
Africa. You are, oh, so big, so full, so enticing, so addicting. You are my connection to past and present.

Africa was both delicious and difficult to see and experience.
From the isolation of stone walls and electric fences in the suburbs to the openness in the shantytowns.
From sharp edges of leftover apartheid to joys of present freedoms.
From the boredom on the faces of men sitting by the road to the joy of the women working a craft.
From children eager to be photographed to adults hesitant to interact.
From crowded minivan taxis to the chauffeured in BMWs.
From assertive young men in the middle of intersections hawking wares to shy rural women exhibiting their embroidery.
From beautiful landscape to graphic front page newspaper photos of mob violence.
From fire to cook food to the deliberate burning of a man.
From potential for bitterness about the past to living contently in the present.
From shame about mob violence to blaming the government.
From openness about apartheid to denial concerning AIDS.
From rawness to finesse.
From rich red earth to clear blue sky.
From flitting birds to roaring lions.
From lonely moonlit nights to afternoons of dancing in the village.
From eating worms to drinking cappuccinos.
From giraffes to dung beetles.
From dirt studios to contemporary galleries.
From six foot wood carvings to minuscule embroidery stitches and glass beads.
From dung paper to china plates.
From averting my eyes from poverty to wanting to serve.
From material poverty to spiritual wealth.

What our travelers say:

"Thank you so much for introducing us to South Africa. You saw to it that we were exposed to a little bit of everything with great humor. The trip was better than we could have hoped for!"

Holly

"This has been a wonderful trip to South Africa! You truly helped us to meet the people and our lives are enriched by this particular trip. Every day has been an adventure."

Anita

"We met with South African people from all walks of life and saw how they lived on a day to day basis. Accompanied by knowledgeable and professional local guides we traversed from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

We toured numerous townships, met with Zulus in their homes, visited with kids in orphanages, climbed the beautiful mountains of the Drakensberg, and learned about Apartheid from varying perspectives and saw the impact it still has on life today — all the while being surrounded by diverse and breathtaking scenery and landscapes. I truly commend The Cultural Explorer - everything was top notch. A once in a lifetime experience."

Maxine

"I saw things in South Africa that I have never seen anywhere else on the planet...the golden skies and lush green of the Drankensburg (my favorite part) ...the sprawling city of Soweto ...so many people were warm and friendly and made you feel welcome...seeing the penguins in Simons Town and running on horseback with the wild herd of giraffe, wilde beast and zebra was another highlight. The Bushman culture came alive for me at Didima."

Jean

"What an experience. We were stunned by what we saw. From the poverty of the townships to the vast, scenic beauty of the country. We will never forget our trip to South Africa with The Cultural Explorer. We are still talking about it."

Don and Sylvia

"The two weeks we spent in South Africa with you were unforgettable-- it's hard to say which days were most memorable. We continue to replay the magnificent scenes of ALL the animals in their natural habitat and the wonderful camps and  lodges we visited-- great and comfortable accommodations with superb staffs.

Also the dramatically different regions of geography and topography that South Africa offers, along with the interesting and changing cultures to which you exposed us. The highlight, perhaps, was the fact that we rarely saw any tour buses, which means we saw the real South Africa!"
